Tea has been a staple of numerous cultures for centuries, and whilst we’re all partial to a brew on a chilly morning, it’s time to get a bit more adventurous than a mug of Typhoo and a dash of milk.

Some teas, whilst called so, aren’t actually traditional teas. Traditional teas like Green and Black Tea come from the Camellia Sinensis [1] plant. Herbal teas however come from a variety of other natural sources, and inherit their amazing medicinal benefits and varying tastes.
Here are 5 teas you should try to mix into your daily routine, and what effects they can have on your day to day lifestyle.

Ginger Tea
If you’ve ever had a ginger biscuit or pretty much any ‘themed’ food around Autumn time, you know what you can expect with Ginger Tea. It’s spicy and packs a punch, but it’s also extremely good for your general wellbeing.
Ginger has been used and documented for centuries as a fantastic natural anti-inflammatory [2], as well as being packed full of health boosting, disease fighting antioxidants [3] including the potential to prevent certain types of cancer.
It’s also great at helping to settle your stomach if you find yourself feeling a little nauseous through the day.

Echinacea Tea
If you’re anything like us, now that the kids are back in school and the weather is getting colder, you’ve inevitably had (or more ominously, will have) the common cold. A staple through the autumn and winter, the stuffy nose and raspy throat is something we’ve all come to accept.
However… if you add a cup of Echinacea Tea into your daily routine, that could potentially be a thing of the past.
Studied of this warming drink have indicated that it could have the desirable effect of boosting your metabolism and in turn, potentially help fight off viruses and infections [4] and many studies have shown it’s capabilities of shortening the duration and effects of the common cold – or even prevent it completely. The results are wholly conclusive so it’s hard to say for certain, but it’s worth giving a shot!
If nothing else, it can help soothe a sore throat and ease a stuffy nose. [5]

Peppermint Tea
Another for digestive health, Peppermint Tea is one of the most widely used herbal teas around the world. This wonderful plant based tea is anti-everything, boasting a wealth of benefits including antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anticancer, antiviral and even antiallergenic properties. [6]
This flavourful tea is useful for indigestion, nausea and stomach pains [7], and helps to ease spasms in the intestines, oesophagus and colon. [8]
All in all, a very worthwhile replacement for your mind-morning brew.

Sage Tea
If you find yourself in a bit of a lull and not firing on all cylinders, it may be time to look towards Sage Tea.
Several studies have started to show that Sage has some incredible cognitive and brain health benefits, whilst a number of test-tube, animal and human studies have shown it can even potentially be effective against the effects of the plaques involved in Alzheimer’s disease. [9], [10]
It also has benefits for healthy adults, with improvements in mood, mental-function and memory. [11]

Lemon Balm Tea
If you want a bit of a citrusy kick first thing in the morning, Lemon Balm Tea could be the tea for you.
There’s been a number of small studies on the effects of Lemon Balm Tea, with some interesting potential benefits observed. On study on 28 people, found that those who drank Lemon Balm Tea when compared to those who drank Barley Tea, had improved elasticity of the arteries. Arterial stiffness is considered a risk factor for heart disease and stroke, as well as mental decline. [12] The group drinking Lemon Balm Tea also showed improved skin elasticity.
In other small studies, those who drank the tea in various doses of Lemon Balm Extract also showed improvements in calmness and memory. [13], [14]
So whilst jury is still out on this tea, it could be a great addition for your health and memory.
